State route signs are road signs that identify state highways maintained by an individual state's Department of Transportation (DOT). Because they are not governed by a single national standard, every state's shield looks different — California's miner's spade, Pennsylvania's keystone, Washington's George Washington silhouette, and many more.
Rice Signs manufactures MUTCD-compliant state route shields for every U.S. state, plus US Route markers and Texas Farm and Ranch route signs. Use the generator below to build the exact sign you need: enter your route number, choose your state, and add it to your cart. All signs are produced on .080 aluminum with High Intensity Prismatic (HIP) reflective sheeting and ship in 3–5 business days.
Enter a 1, 2, or 3 digit route number and select state from below.
Real customer signs produced from the custom route sign generator above.
State route signs are produced on .080 aluminum — the gauge specified for permanent highway and DOT installations. Sign blanks are corrosion-resistant and built for long outdoor service life in all weather conditions.
Every sign is finished with High Intensity Prismatic (HIP) reflective sheeting. HIP provides strong nighttime retroreflectivity at headlight angles and meets the sheeting requirements for most regulatory, warning, and guide sign applications. If your job specifies Diamond Grade (DG3) or Engineer Grade, call us for a custom quote.
Standard sizes vary by state, with common configurations including 24"×24" and 24"×30". Larger sizes are available for highway and freeway applications. The configurator above selects the appropriate size for the state you choose; if you need a non-standard size, contact us before ordering.
Every shield is reproduced from the appropriate Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) drawing or the corresponding state DOT specification. When you select a state in the generator, the correct shield design and SKU load automatically — Alabama M1-5, California G28-2, Florida FTP-28, New York NYM3-1, Washington M1-601, and so on for all 50 states.
A state route sign — also called a state highway shield or state route marker — identifies a numbered highway maintained by a state Department of Transportation. They are posted at highway intersections, on freeway ramps, and along the route itself as confirmation markers for motorists.
The MUTCD provides a generic outline shield (designated M1-5) that many states use as the basis for their route markers. However, each state DOT has the authority to design its own shield, and many states have adopted distinctive shapes tied to local history or geography. California uses the miner's spade. Pennsylvania uses the keystone. Washington uses the silhouette of George Washington. Florida uses a circular shield with an orange blossom. Whatever state you need, the generator above produces the correct, recognizable design.
It's easy to confuse the three highway shield families. State route signs identify highways maintained by an individual state DOT. US Route shields (the black-and-white shield used on routes like US-1 and US-61) identify the federally numbered US Highway System. Interstate signs (the red, white, and blue shield) identify the Interstate Highway System. Rice Signs manufactures custom signs in all three categories.
| Feature | M1-1 — Interstate Route Sign | M1-5 — State Route Marker |
|---|---|---|
| What it identifies | Routes on the Interstate Highway System | Highways maintained by an individual state DOT |
| Authority | Federal — FHWA / AASHTO numbering | Individual state Departments of Transportation |
| Shape | Cutout shield — flat top, curved sides, pointed bottom | Default outline shield; many states use a distinctive custom shape |
| Colors | Red, white, and blue — white "INTERSTATE" on red, white numerals on blue | Black numerals on white (default); colors vary by state |
| Where you'll see it | Interstate freeways (I-95, I-10, I-70, etc.) | Numbered state routes (CA-1, NY-25, FL-A1A, etc.) |
| Design variation | Federally standardized — same shield nationwide | States may design their own (PA keystone, CA spade, WA George Washington silhouette, etc.) |
| Numbering | 1–2 digit primary routes; 3-digit auxiliary/loop routes | Assigned independently by each state DOT |
