Understanding U-Channel Sign Posts: 2 lb vs 3 lb Per Foot, Hole Spacing, and Tapered End

Published · Updated

Introduction

A u-channel sign post is one of the most common sign supports you will see along roadways, in parking lots, and on private property. Named for its U-shaped cross section, this steel post provides a wide channel on the front face where a sign sits flush, and a flat back that can support an additional sign facing the opposite direction.

What Does "Pounds Per Foot" Mean?

When you see a u-channel post described as 2 pounds per foot or 3 pounds per foot, it simply refers to how much one foot of that post weighs. A 2 pound per foot post that is 10 feet long weighs 20 pounds total, while a 3 pound per foot post of the same length weighs 30 pounds. The heavier post has thicker steel walls, making it stronger and more rigid. A 2 pound per foot post is well suited for parking lots, neighborhood streets, and smaller signs like parking or warning signs. A 3 pound per foot post is the better choice when you need to support larger or heavier signs, when the post will be exposed to higher wind loads, or when state or local DOT specifications call for a heavier post on public roadways and highways.

Hole Spacing

Both the 2 and 3 pound per foot posts come with pre-punched holes running the full length of the post. Each hole is 3/8 of an inch in diameter, and the holes are spaced exactly 1 inch apart, measured from center to center. The first hole sits 1 inch from the top of the post. This consistent spacing makes it easy to mount a sign at virtually any height using standard 5/16 inch bolt hardware.

The Tapered End

At the bottom of every u-channel post, the flanges are tapered inward across the last 2.5 inches. This taper acts as a guide point, allowing the post to enter the ground or slide into a breakaway anchor base with less resistance. Without the taper, the flat bottom edge of the post would catch on soil or the anchor sleeve, making installation significantly harder.
