About Narrow Bridge Signs
What are Narrow Bridge Signs, and how are they used?
Narrow Bridge Signs give drivers advance notice that the roadway will narrow as they approach a narrow bridge. These diamond-shaped warning signs are available in two colors for two distinct uses. Yellow rigid signs (W5-2) are for permanent installation, and orange rigid signs (W5-2C) are temporarily installed in construction zones.
What is considered a “narrow bridge”?
Although the MUTCD doesn’t specifically define a “narrow bridge”, its guidance calls for the use of a Narrow Bridge Sign when a bridge on a two-way roadway is only 16 to 18 ft. wide (2C.18, 01).
How are “Narrow Bridge” and “Narrow Underpass” Signs different?
For both Narrow Bridge Sign and Narrow Underpass Sign guidance, the “narrow” section of roadway is defined by the same 16 to 18 ft. width (2C.18, 01). The only difference between these two signs is whether the narrowed roadway is at a bridge or at an underpass.
How can I make a Narrow Bridge Sign more visible?
The MUTCD mentions that using object markers, delineators, and/or pavement markings are three possible ways that Narrow Bridge Signs can be highlighted (2C.18, 02).
Where are Narrow Bridge Signs placed?
The MUTCD provides general guidance that a Narrow Bridge Sign should be placed “in advance” of a narrow bridge (2C.18, 01). Signs are typically placed ahead of the bridge where space allows.
Are Narrow Bridge Signs customizable?
Because of their simple, straightforward design and messaging, Narrow Bridge Signs aren’t usually customized.
Selecting and Mounting a Narrow Bridge Sign
Which size sign should I choose?
Most roads and all highways require the 36”x36” sign size, and interstates require the 48”x48” sign size. The minimum sign size, 30”x30”, should be used only on low-speed or residential roads.
How are Narrow Bridge Signs mounted?
Rigid Narrow Bridge Signs are compatible with round, square, and U-channel posts and can be mounted with your choice of sign mounting hardware. Check the table below for more information on the number of posts required for each sign and the quantity of predrilled holes each size has.
