Drivers read this sign as an instruction to brake, not merely to steer — which is why substituting W1-2L (Curve Left) on genuinely tight geometry is a safety problem rather than a labeling one. Chevron alignment signs (W1-8) are commonly run through the turn itself to reinforce the path, with a W13-1P plaque below the diamond when an advisory speed applies. The right-hand equivalent is W1-1R.
