Setup & Installation
How do I set up the plastic base and install the panels/barricade lights?
Our installation guide walks you through the setup and installation step-by-step.
Using Type III Barricades
What are Type III Barricades used for?
Contractors use Type III Barricades to restrict roadway access or fully close roadways. This barricade type is also used when construction work is performed on highways and other high-speed roads.
How can I close a road with a Type III Barricade?
When closing an entire road, barricades may be placed side-by-side to more clearly and visibly signal to drivers that there is a road closure ahead.
What are some traffic signs commonly paired with these barricades?
R11-2 Road Closed Signs, R9-9 Sidewalk Closed Signs, and related signs are commonly seen when there is a road or sidewalk closure.
About Plastic Bases
Can I mount a Barricade Light onto this base?
To further improve visibility and take nighttime conditions into account, a total of two Barricade Lights can be installed onto this base. Each mast upright has one mounting hole for one light molded into the material.
Are Warning Flags compatible with this base?
Yes, Warning Flags can be mounted onto each upright of the plastic base. The same molded mounting holes that accommodate Barricade Lights also accommodate Warning Flags.
Is there a way to add weight to the plastic base?
Each plastic foot can be filled with water or up to 45 lbs. of sand for extra stability, so sandbags aren’t necessary to use. This additional ballasting is especially important when barricades are used on high-speed roads.
What are the components of the plastic base?
One plastic base of consists of four parts: two uprights, which stand vertically, and two feet, which are attached at the bottom of the uprights. Each base uses two uprights and two feet.
Plastic vs. Metal Bases
How do I know whether to use a plastic base or a metal base?
his decision is typically left to local guidance. Some jurisdictions may require barricades with the more cost-effective plastic base, while others may require barricades with metal bases.
How do the plastic base and metal base differ?
The two styles have identical functions, but differ in their weights and installation. The combined plastic base assembly is lighter than the comparable metal base assembly.
About Panels
What is the advantage of choosing double-sided panels vs. single-sided?
Instead of two single-sided barricades, just one barricade with double-sided retroreflective panels can be used to restrict access from both sides of the road. This is possible because stripes should slant downward toward the open part of the roadway.
Why is the striped pattern mirrored on each side of the double-sided panel?
On the front of double-sided panels, stripes slant downward to the right to direct traffic to the right. On the back, stripes slant downward to the left to direct traffic to the left.
When should I choose a 6' panel vs. an 8' panel?
This consideration is left to state and local traffic authorities. Both length options fulfill MUTCD requirements (6K.07, 05).
Patterns & Colors
When are red/white-striped panels used?
Red/white panels are used for permanent road closures and are often paired with Type 4 Object Markers
When should I choose the center-out striped pattern?
The center-out pattern is the sheeting pattern where the stripes start from the center. The stripes slant down to the left on the left side, and vice versa, the stripes slant down to the right on the right side. This pattern is used when drivers are allowed to turn left and right, away from the road closure (6K.07, 07).
What is the center-in striped pattern used for?
The center-in pattern has the stripes start from each edge and slant down toward the middle. This pattern is used in limited situations and signals that no turns are intended to be performed (6K.07, 08).
Manufacturing & Materials
What materials are used to manufacture the plastic base?
The base and square mast uprights are made with high-density polyethylene that has been UV-stabilized to be durable in the direct sun.
How are panels designed and manufactured?
Blow-molded, 8-inch-tall plastic panels are manufactured with high-density polyethylene. The plastic material has been UV-stabilized and is lightweight without compromising durability. In contrast to other panel styles, the panels we offer have closed ends to block out dirt, moisture, and insects.
What is the difference between sheeting materials?
High-intensity prismatic (HIP) sheeting fulfills federal retroreflectivity requirements, while full-cube prismatic (FCP) sheeting meets and greatly exceeds those standards.
How long will the sheeting last?
HIP sheeting and FCP sheeting both have a warranty of 3 years.
How is the sheeting applied onto a panel?
We use a specialized laminator to apply sheeting onto panels, ensuring a precise application with no overhang.
Standards & Specifications
Are these barricades MUTCD-compliant?
All the dimensions listed follow guidelines set by the MUTCD. The Type III Barricade With Plastic Base is also NCHRP-350 crash-tested and approved.
What are the specifications/measurements for each part of the barricade?
Panels are 8" in height and each stripe on the sheeting is 6" wide. Each plastic foot is 48" in length, each mast upright is 63" in height, and panels are 6’ or 8’ in width.
How are SKU numbers determined?
SKU numbers follow the barricade type, the panel width, the sheeting material, sidedness, and the sheeting pattern. For instance, the T3-6-HI-DS-C SKU# represents a Type III Barricade with high-intensity prismatic sheeting that is double-sided and has a center-out striped pattern.
Orders & Shipping
How is this product packaged and shipped?
All components of the plastic base are bundled and shipped in bulk on pallets, and the 6’/8’ panels are packaged in a cut-to-size cardboard container to minimize shifting during transit.
