Introduction
Channelizer drums create a clear boundary between an open travel lane and a closed construction lane or shoulder. By blocking traffic from entering construction zones, drums protect drivers from road work machinery and reduce potential road hazards for workers. Channelizing Devices are defined in Part 6 - Chapter 6K of the 11th Edition of the MUTCD on page 815.Specifications
Our CD-46HI and CD-46FP channelizer drums are made with lightweight, UV-resistant low-density polyethylene. Drums can withstand extended sun exposure without its fluorescent orange color fading and multiple impacts without cracking. Featuring a 18-inch width, 36-inch height, and multi-directional sheeting, drums remain highly visible and MUTCD-compliant in any orientation.Channelizer drums arrive with one of two sheeting materials adhered onto the drum surface: high-intensity prismatic sheeting or diamond-grade prismatic sheeting. High-intensity prismatic sheeting is available in white and orange on our CD-46HI drums, and ***3M diamond-grade prismatic or its equivalent sheeting is available in white and fluorescent orange on our CD-46FP. Drums include four 6-inch bands of sheeting in alternating colors, with the top stripe being orange or fluorescent orange. Indented lines on the drum are designed to reduce sheeting wear and tear when drums are placed or transported.
When drums are impacted, both sheeting and adhesive flex with the polyethylene. High-quality sheeting material minimizes damage to prisms in the case of impact, and this resistance to impact damage extends a drum's usable lifetime. The compatible heavy-duty tire ring base provides a wide footprint and sufficient weight to hold the drum in place in windy or turbulent conditions, with the assembled drum and base weighing approximately 35 pounds. To order channelizer drums with tire ring bases, add -TRB to our SKU number.
Crash Test
NCHRP-350 crash tested drums are designed to completely separate from its rubber base with minimal rolling after impact. The D-shaped drum bottoms significantly reduce the chances of the drum rolling far from its initial placement when compared to drums with rounded bottoms. Low-density polyethylene drums are flexible and have the ability to be reshaped after impact, often eliminating the need to purchase drum replacements. In most cases, laying an impacted drum on its side and pushing down with moderate force will return the drum to its original molded shape.Channelizer drums are tapered for compact stacking, while molded handles make moving drums from place to place easy and quick. Drums can be stacked with or without the compatible barricade lights attached, and with or without the tire ring base installed.
Setup
The approximately 25-pound tire ring base features a simple and quick installation.Installing the tire ring base:
- Orient the base with its wider side down, and raise the base over the drum.
- Lower the base carefully until it rests on the drum bottom.
The drums' molded handles include two mounting locations for barricade lights.
