Construction Signs FAQs

What are Construction Signs?

Construction Signs are bright orange, diamond-shaped signs that are temporarily placed before, in, and after work zones. Sign messaging alerts drivers to potential road hazards ahead, informs them of what those hazards are, and communicates how to navigate upcoming changes in traffic flow. Signs in this category include Road Work Signs, Detour Signs, Work Zone Speed Limit signs, and more.

What safety and compliance standards govern Construction Signs?

The Federal Highway Administration specifies the design of construction signs on page 765 of MUTCD. Three types of reflective material are commonly used on temporary traffic control signs. Avery reflective sheeting and 3m reflective sheeting are most commonly used. Sheeting warranties typically range from 1 to 3 years. State-specific MUTCD supplements dictate the exact requirements for temporary signs used on state projects.

What materials are used to make construction signs, and what durability do they have?

Three types of reflective material are commonly used on temporary traffic control construction signs. Avery Denison sheeting and 3m reflective sheeting are the most commonly used manufacturers. Sheeting warranties typically range from 1 to 3 years. Smaller signs are typically made using aluminum with a .08-inch thickness. Plastic versions are available upon request.

What does the ordering process involve, and what is the availability of construction signs?

Ordering signs for a construction zone can be more complicated than traditional signs due to the state-specific requirements that must be met. It is always best to inform the customer representative if the signs will be used on a state-funded project. This link can be used to see different construction signs. Many different sizes and sheeting types are offered. Construction signs and related items are usually shipped out on one of several truck carriers that we use. PRO numbers are emailed to customers to give delivery estimates.

Where are Construction Signs typically placed?

According to the MUTCD, all Construction Signs should be placed to the right of the roadway. A second sign may be placed to the left of the roadway for “special emphasis.” Construction Signs most often appear before, in and after work zones on highways, but they can be placed on roads of any speed or size. Signs are also placed ahead of areas where mowing, survey work, or utility work is underway.

What does “temporary traffic control” refer to?

Temporary traffic control, or TTC, is a MUTCD category of signs and traffic devices that guide drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians through work zones in their path. Because TTC signs are for temporary use, the MUTCD mentions that signs should be removed or covered when no longer needed.

What other TTC devices are used with Construction Signs?

Channelizers, including channelizing drums and tubes, are almost always used in combination with Construction Signs. These two TTC categories support each other: Construction Signs provide information about the work being performed ahead, while Channelizers create a physical boundary around the work zone.

Which Construction Sign size should I select?

The primary factor in selecting a Construction Sign size is the type of road where you will mount the sign. For diamond-shaped Construction Signs, 36”x36” signs are adequate for local roads, while highways and interstates require 48”x48” signs. In some situations, 30”x30” signs are used on low-volume residential streets. For rectangular signs and placards in the Road Closed, Work Zone Speed Limit, and Detour categories, the smaller sizes are generally for local roads, while the larger rectangular signs and placards are for highways and interstates.
For more specific guidance about Construction Sign sizes, Tables 6G-1, 6H-1, and 6I-1 in the MUTCD each contain detailed information about TTC Regulatory Signs, Warning Signs, Detour Signs, and all of their supporting placards.

How are diamond-shaped Construction Signs measured?

The length and width of a diamond-shaped Construction Sign is reflected in its measurement. For example, 36”x36” signs are 36 inches in length and 36 inches in width. From tip to bottom, 36”x36” signs measure approximately 51 inches.

When should I use a rigid Construction Sign vs. a roll-up Construction Sign, and vice versa?

Rigid Construction Signs and roll-up Construction Signs tend to have different applications in different situations. This guide on choosing a sign type and material can help narrow down your selection process.

How are Construction Signs mounted?

Construction Signs are rigid signs that can be mounted onto standard posts. 30-inch and 36-inch signs have two pre-drilled holes for you to quickly mount them onto one round, square, or U-channel post. 48-inch signs have four pre-drilled holes and require two posts of any style for mounting.

What is the mounting height for Construction Signs?

The minimum mounting height for Construction Signs varies. In rural areas, the minimum sign mounting height is 5 ft. In any urban area, signs should be mounted at 7 ft. When signs are mounted onto Portable Sign Stands or any Barricade style, the minimum mounting height is 1 ft. Mounting heights are measured from the bottom of the sign to the ground, curb, or pavement.

Can I mount a Construction Sign onto a Type 3 Barricade?

Yes. The minimum mounting height for a Construction Sign on a Type 3 Barricade is 1 ft.

Are Construction Signs compatible with Portable Sign Stands?

Yes, Construction Signs can be mounted onto most Portable Sign Stands. You can find more information about compatible sign stand models here.

How do I increase the visibility of Construction Signs during night work?

Construction Signs with fluorescent orange full-cube prismatic sheeting have additional retroreflectivity to appear brighter at night. Bright orange flags can also be mounted to make signs more visible for passing drivers.

Are nuts and bolts included with a Construction Sign purchase?

Although nuts and bolts aren’t included, we offer everything you need here on our Sign Mounting Hardware page. Each set of basic and vandal-resistant hardware is available in your choice of zinc-plated steel, galvanized steel, or stainless steel.

Where can I find more information about Construction Signs?

Chapter 6 of the MUTCD contains in-depth information about TTC Construction Sign usage and specifications.

What Customization Options are available?
