About Overlays
What are Overlays?
Overlays make roll-up signs multi-purpose by changing their sign messaging. Overlays can modify the distance, direction, or transition messaging of select roll-up signs. For example, “Detour Ahead” roll-up signs can be used with a horizontal arrow Overlay. The arrow symbol Overlay covers the word “Ahead”, and the resulting sign reads “Detour” with an arrow pointing left or right.
What are some advantages of using an Overlay?
With Overlays, you can use one roll-up sign in different phases of your project. One example is when you are repaving a road one lane at a time. To close the right lane, you can place the Right Lane Closed Ahead roll-up sign on the roadside. When road work in the right lane is completed and the left lane is ready to be worked on, you can use a “Left” Overlay to change the roll-up sign messaging to “Left Lane Closed Ahead”. Overlays can potentially reduce project costs and lessen the bulk of roll-up sign transport.
Options
What materials are Overlays manufactured with?
We manufacture Overlays to match the material of any roll-up sign you choose. Options include the open mesh, non-reflective vinyl, and all reflective vinyl materials.
How are Overlays attached onto roll-up signs?
All-metal, powder-coated snaps are machined onto Overlays and roll-up signs. The secure connection between the Overlay and roll-up sign prevents separation in wind and other normal roadside conditions.
Are Overlays included with Changeable Message Roll-Up Signs?
No, most Overlays are optional add-ons to your purchase. However, there is one exception: a required Overlay is included when you order a changeable message Transition Symbol Sign.
Compatibility
Are vinyl Overlays compatible with mesh Roll-Up Signs, and vice versa?
No, the Overlays may fit correctly across sign materials, but it isn’t recommended to do so for compliance reasons.
Can I use Overlays for 36-inch roll-up signs on 48-inch roll-up signs, and vice versa?
Overlays aren’t compatible across sign sizes. This is because the text size on 36-inch roll-up signs and the text size on 48-inch roll-up signs are different. We resize Overlays for two reasons: to fully cover the sign messaging underneath and to keep roll-up signs with Overlays MUTCD-compliant.

Do you offer Overlays for rigid signs?
Yes, upon request we can manufacture any Overlay style onto aluminum. Common requests for rigid sign Overlays include the Transition Symbol Overlay and the “Left” Overlay that covers the word “Right”. Rigid sign Overlays are secured onto rigid signs with heavy-duty screws. Check out this page about rigid signs (page in progress) for more information.
Can I have snaps added to a roll-up sign I’ve already purchased?
Snaps can’t be added to roll-up signs after purchase. If you would like to use Overlays, make sure to select changeable message roll-up signs.
