Measurements
Standard round sign posts are available in lengths of 8, 10, or 12 feet, with a 2-3/8" outer diameter measured from the exterior and not the interior of the circle. 16-gauge galvanized steel posts have a wall thickness of .065" and a 1.60 lb/ft weight. In contrast to the pre-punched holes and bolts seen in other post styles, round sign posts use single- or double-sided post clamps to securely hold signs in place.
In some cases, round posts can be directly installed into the ground or into newly-poured concrete with no additional installation hardware required. In other cases, local jurisdictions may require round posts to be installed using breakaway hardware. Which breakaway hardware to use depends on the surface the sign is being installed into.
Ground installation using breakaway hardware starts with burying a 2-3/8" 3-foot round base post into the ground. Whether to use concrete to further secure the base post is determined by soil conditions and local regulations. The next step is to install the cast iron round breakaway coupler, which allows for the top post to be connected to the base post. Aligning the top post with the coupler and tightening the bolts completes the post installation process. If the sign post is struck by a vehicle, the breakaway hardware breaks and the top post falls to minimize impact damage.
To install round posts onto concrete, first secure the cast iron breakaway base to the concrete using the included lag bolts. Since the coupler is combined with the base, the next and last step is to attach the round post onto the coupler. Once installation is complete, this breakaway hardware will provide the same safety function as the hardware used for ground installation.
