Specifications and Measurement
We offer 6-, 8-, 10-, 12-, or 14-foot lengths for the standard 2" x 2" square sign post, which is suitable for most applications. 1.75" x 1.75" wide posts are additionally available in 8-, 10-, or 12-foot lengths. Any post style can be chosen with the standard 14-gauge wall thickness or a 12-gauge wall thickness.12-gauge, 3-foot base posts, which help anchor the sign post to the ground, measure .25" wider than their matching square top post. 2.25" x 2.25" base posts closely fit 2" x 2" square sign posts, while 2" x 2" base posts are paired with 1.75" x 1.75" square sign posts. Figure 1 below shows the hole size and hole spacing of different square sign posts.
Sign Installation
Pre-punched holes have a 7/16" diameter to take standard drive rivets or bolt mounting hardware. Holes on the post are aligned in the center of each side surface and spaced 1 inch apart, with the distance measured from the center of one hole to the center of the next hole. The center of the first hole is .5" below the top of the post, and the center of the last hole is .5" above the bottom of the post.Their square shape gives square sign posts two main advantages: wind resistance and numerous sign configurations. When square sign posts are installed into the ground, they are set in a square-shaped hole. This makes it significantly less likely that posts will rotate (Torsional stability) in the wind, which is an important quality for a sign post that can have signs mounted on any or all of its sides. Similar to u channel posts, square posts can be installed using jam nuts and corner bolts to create a full breakaway system.
Deciding on square sign post length, width, and gauge depends on roadside elevation, roadway configuration, base post use, and a number of other factors. Sign mounting specifications are set on page 899 in Section 2A.16 of the MUTCD , but your local jurisdiction may provide secondary guidance. Standard sign mounting hardware and brackets can be installed at the top of the post to allow for the easy installation of a variety of street name signs. Traditional signs and other accessories can be installed on any of the four sides. Figure 2 shows the wall thickness, mounting hole spacing, and diameter for square posts.
