All About Street Name Signs

A green extruded street name signs with block numbers.

Introduction

At the heart of every typical intersection is the classic street name sign. Mounted alongside or above roadways, street name signs identify the two intersecting streets by name on local, state, or federal routes. As an essential wayfinding tool, residents, travelers, and first responders alike rely on street name signs to quickly navigate cities and towns.

Specifications

Standard street name signs are typically printed on both sides of a .080" flat, rectangular sheet of aluminum. Upon request, we can print one- or two-sided street name designs onto thicker gauge aluminum or extruded aluminum signs. Extruded signs have two ribs, one at the top and one at the bottom of the sign. Because of their increased wind resistance and stability, extruded signs are an attractive choice to jurisdictions that are often exposed to inclement weather.

Durability

By default, street name signs are overlayed with UV-resistant, anti-graffiti film at no additional charge. Most materials used for sign graffiti wipe clean, saving you the cost and hassle of replacing defaced or damaged signs. The UV-resistant quality of anti-graffiti film also increases sign durability and extends the usable lifetime from 12 years to 15 years for full-cube microprismatic sheeting, and from 10 years to 12 years for high-intensity microprismatic sheeting. Relatedly, vandal-resistant set screws, compatible only with a specialized wrench, reduce the likelihood of signs being removed by unauthorized third parties.

Installation

Street names signs are mounted parallel to the streets they name. Post caps allow you to install the first street name sign onto any post shape, and crosspiece brackets accommodate a second street name sign. Our standard crosspiece brackets are designed for streets that intersect at a 90-degree angle, while our adjustable crosspiece brackets allow for orienting the two sign blades to match any intersection angle.

Post Options

For street name signs installed onto metal posts, the required sign height depends entirely on the roadway traveling speed. 6-inch signs are often seen in residential areas where the speed limit is 25 MPH or less. 9-inch signs can be used anywhere the speed limit is 40 MPH or less, while 12-inch signs are only used when the speed limit is over 40 MPH. 18-inch overhead street name signs, which are installed onto traffic wire or posts beside traffic lights, provide better sign readability to the drivers below.

Jurisdiction

Street name signs can differ greatly in appearance as their design takes several factors into account. Signs installed on posts range from 18 inches to 48 inches wide depending on how long a given street name is. Some jurisdictions require block numbers to be placed on the right, left, or both sides of a sign. Mixed-case street names with descending letters need resizing to fit properly on signs without cutoff. As for sign colors, federal guidance in the MUTCD lists green as the default street name sign color and includes blue, brown, and white signs as alternate compliant colors. Local jurisdictions, however, may reserve certain colors for specific uses. We will gladly manufacture street name signs in any unique combination of size, width, street name, and color.
