About Stop Slow Paddles
Stop-slow paddles are typically used when a two-lane road must be narrowed into a single lane in a construction zone. When road work tasks such as repaving asphalt or unloading equipment are underway, one double-sided stop-slow paddle can notify drivers approaching from both directions of an upcoming lane closure.Regulatory Compliance and Safety Standards
Available in two sizes and two styles, our stop-slow paddles are lightweight, durable, and easy to maneuver. 18-inch and 24-inch sign sizes provide sufficient visibility without the excess weight of larger signs, while both high-intensity prismatic and full-cube prismatic sheeting styles fulfill MUTCD material standards. Each stop-slow paddle consists of two pre-assembled parts, an orange ABS molded plastic handle and the double-sided .080” aluminum stop-slow sign. The aluminum sign is securely attached to the ABS handle with two screws and two nuts.Sizes and Styles
Stop-slow paddles can be used as handheld signs or paired with staffs and used as standing signs. With 18-inch paddles weighing _____ pounds and 24-inch paddles weighing ___ pounds, our lightweight paddles can reduce the potential for strained hands or shoulders. Alternatively, choosing to attach a staff to the paddle handle can make it easier to keep the stop-slow sign upright for longer periods of time. We offer two staff styles, the first being a two-piece staff that stands at 5 feet tall when the two pieces are connected, and the second being a telescoping staff that can be extended to a length of 5 feet or 6 feet. A 6-foot display height is possible with the two-piece staff attached to the paddle handle, and a 6-foot or 7-foot display height is possible when the adjustable telescoping staff is attached to the paddle handle. The combined handle and staff assembly allows for a one- or two-handed grip, and the rounded shape of the protective bottom cap makes rotating the staff easy. In addition, the front and back of the staff is slightly flattened to help users correctly orient the staff without losing focus on directing traffic flow.Alternative Versions
The stop-stop paddle variation can be used in cases where temporarily pausing both directions of traffic flowing through a two-lane road is necessary. One such case involves a school crossing in a school zone. School crossing guards can raise the stop-stop paddle to signal drivers to stop and allow students to safely cross the road.
Specifications
Made from heavy-duty .080” aluminum, stop-slow paddle signs are durable, rust-proof, and long-lasting. Sign images can be printed onto one of two MUTCD-compliant sheeting materials, high-intensity prismatic or full-cube prismatic sheeting, with matching materials on both sides of the sign. Orders of both our S-SL and S-SLH stop-slow paddles arrive with the double-sided octagon-shaped sign and orange ABS handle pre-assembled and ready for handheld use. S-SL paddle orders have two main variations, one that includes a two-piece staff and one that includes a telescopic staff. Staffs are used to extend the paddle handle to easily hold the paddle upright for extended periods of time. As octagon-shaped signs are measured from the top of the sign to the bottom of the sign, 18-inch stop-slow signs have a height of 18 inches, and 24-inch stop-slow signs have a height of 24 inches. The total height of an 18-inch paddle is 28 inches from the top of the aluminum sign to the bottom of the handle, and the total height of a 24-inch paddle is 34 inches. The front of the double-sided octagon-shaped sign features a traditional red and white stop sign, while the back of the sign uses black and orange to represent a diamond-shaped slow sign. The black bars on the four corners of the octagon form the orange diamond shape of the slow sign, and the word “SLOW” is printed in the center of the diamond. Figure 1 shows the front and back of the stop-slow paddle. Stop-slow paddles can be set to three distinct lengths: a handle-only length, a paddle and two-piece staff assembly length, and a paddle and telescoping staff assembly length. This length customization allows for a range of display heights. When stop-slow paddles are used as handheld signs, a 10-inch length out of the 15-inch ABS handle is available for a comfortable one-handed grip. When stop-slow paddles are used as standing signs, a locking spring button securely connects the two-piece or telescoping staff to the paddle handle. Both staff styles consist of two pieces of ABS plastic similarly connected with locking spring buttons. The two-piece staff measures 5 feet tall when assembled, while the paddle and two-piece staff assembly has a display height of ___ feet. Because a telescoping staff can be set at 5 feet or 6 feet, the paddle and telescoping staff assembly can be adjusted to a display height of either 6 feet or 7 feet. Telescoping staffs are shortened to 46 inches for compact shipping and can be easily and securely extended to its 5-foot or 6-foot length for use. Two-piece staffs are also compactly packaged and shipped, arriving in two easily linked pieces.Assembly
The S-SLH paddle-only stop-slow sign is pre-assembled and does not require any further assembly. The S-SL paddles that include either the two-piece staff or the telescoping staff can be quickly and easily assembled. Assembling the paddle and two-piece staff- Select the first staff piece and orient the piece so that the protective bottom cap points downward. Locate the socket hole on its head.
- Orient the second staff piece so that the locking spring button is aligned with the socket hole of the first staff piece.
- Press down firmly on the button, and slide the second staff piece down until the hole and button are matched. When you hear a click, the two parts of the staff attachment are securely connected.
- To attach the stop-slow paddle to the two-piece staff, align the button at the top of the staff with the socket hole in the paddle handle. Press down on the button and slide the paddle handle down until you hear a click.
- Orient the compacted telescoping staff so that the protective bottom cap points downward.
- Press down firmly on the button located on the orange body of the staff.
- Grip the head of the telescoping staff and slide the inner piece upward until the button aligns with the socket hole of the outer piece and clicks into place. This results in the telescoping staff standing at 5 feet tall.
- Repeat Steps 2-3 to adjust the telescoping staff to its height of 6 feet.
- To attach the telescoping staff to the stop-slow paddle handle, press the button at the head of the telescoping staff and carefully slide the paddle handle down.
