About Weight Limit Signs

What are Weight Limit Signs, and how are they used?

These signs restrict vehicles with excess weight from proceeding through a certain section of the road. Vehicles that have weight limits placed upon them include freight trucks of varying weights and sizes, and in some situations, emergency vehicles.

In what cases are these signs used?

When road engineers determine the maximum weight that a bridge or similar structure can withstand, they may decide to restrict entry of heavy vehicles onto a road or structure. Weight Limit Signs are used in these cases to communicate the maximum vehicle weight allowed on a given road, which typically varies depending on the vehicle type.

How do drivers know that a weight-restricted area is ahead?

The MUTCD requires an additional sign to be installed in advance of a weight-restricted area (2B.64, 14). This gives drivers of oversized vehicles the chance to turn around or detour. Only general guidance is given about the appearance of this additional sign, mentioning that an "advisory distance" or "directional legend" should be used (2B.64, 14).

What other signs are used with Weight Limit Signs?

Weigh Station Signs (R13-1) and Truck Route Signs (R14-1) are commonly used in combination with Weight Limit Signs.

Customizations

What can be customized?

The weight and/or the number of tons can be changed to what is applicable in your project. Units of either "Lbs" or "Tons" can also be changed.

Can I add the word "Bridge" to the standard messaging?

Yes, the structure that the weight-limit restriction applies to, such as "Bridge", can be added to signs for more clarity in messaging (2B.64, 09).

How do I know whether to use "Lbs" or "Tons"?

The MUTCD notes that the state or region determines which weight unit that should be used, and the unit must be consistent within a traffic jurisdiction (2B.64, 02).

Can I customize any of the vehicle symbols?

Symbol customization isn't possible for these signs. The MUTCD specifically mentions that custom symbols of other vehicle types and modifications of standard symbols are not allowed (2B.64, 08).

Manufacturing & Materials

What materials are used in manufacturing these signs?

We use .080" rustproof aluminum as a base for your choice of high-intensity prismatic (HIP) or full-cube prismatic (FCP) sheeting. Sheeting is permanently applied onto the aluminum and will not separate.

What is the warranty for these signs?

The warranty of the sign falls under the sheeting material used. Signs made with HIP sheeting have a 10-year warranty, and signs made with FCP sheeting have a 12-year warranty.

Standards, Orders & Shipping

What standards do these signs meet?

All signs are federally compliant with MUTCD guidelines. For sign elements that are left to states and municipalities, we will work with you to ensure that the signs you order are designed to the specifications of your local jurisdiction.

How do you package and ship these signs?

Signs are arranged back-to-back, with every sign face protected by a layer of slip sheeting. The cardboard box used for shipment is cut to size to minimize shifting during transit.

When will my order arrive?

We quickly process all orders and ship signs soon after purchase. Smaller signs ship via ground shipping, and larger signs ship via truck carrier. You will receive email confirmation that your package has shipped. Refer to that email for the UPS or PRO tracking number.
